Synthetic nicotine now under FDA regulation

A spending bill passed by Congress in March 2022 gave the FDA the power to regulate synthetic nicotine products, closing a loophole that has allowed manufacturers to avoid federal regulation.

The bill required companies to apply for FDA approval for any synthetic nicotine products by May 14, 2022. A total of 200 manufacturers submitted about one million synthetic nicotine product applications by that deadline. Companies that had not received FDA authorization were required to pull their products from the market by July 13, 2022.
