A recently released report by the Commonwealth Fund gave Wisconsin’s healthcare system high marks in many categories. The state was ranked seventh overall in prevention and treatment, scoring particularly high in indicators such as attentive and informative hospital staff and the number of adults with age-and gender-appropriate cancer screenings.
The Wisconsin healthcare system ranked thirteenth in access to care, fourteenth in avoidable hospital use and costs, and sixteenth in populations living a healthy lifestyle, all within the second quintile of the nation. Wisconsin improved from the baseline in all major categories with the exception of equity, where the state ranking fell from 25th to 27th in the nation. The equity indicator rates gaps in performance for vulnerable populations by income and race/ethnicity. The report ranked Wisconsin’s health system 11th overall in the country.
