On December 13, 2016, President Obama signed into law the 21st Century Cures Act. 21st Century Cures is significant to the cancer community in its support of medical research and development with the goal of connecting individuals to potentially lifesaving treatments. The over 300-page Act provides the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with funding for two major cancer-related projects, including the President’s Precision Medicine Initiative and the Vice President’s Cancer Moonshot. It also includes funding to support mental health and substance abuse services and streamlines the approval process for drugs and medical devices through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
