Missed Opportunities in Cancer Prevention
According to a June 2016 article published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the HPV vaccine is an under-utilized preventative intervention tool for one of the most common cancer causing infections. Over 1 million people worldwide develop cancers caused by viral infections annually. Of those, nearly 600,000 are a result of HPV. The HPV vaccine has been around for 10 years and has continuously proven to be safe, and effective. A recent report by the CDC estimated that over 53,000 cases of cervical cancer could be prevented by increasing HPV vaccine completion to 80%. Several barriers will have to be addressed in order to increase the rate, however oncologists like Dr. Howard Bailey and colleagues are working diligently to spread the message.
