Protecting Smokefree Laws from the Cigar Industry: LESSONS FROM THE FRONT LINES

February 13, 2024 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Join tobacco control advocates from the front lines and hear about lessons learned as they work to keep their smokefree laws strong from roll-back attempts by the cigar industry. Register for this free webinar and join the conversation, Tuesday, February 13th at 10:30 am PST.

Across the country, the industry has been pushing for cigar bar/lounge exemptions to strong local and state smokefree laws, peeling back lifesaving protections to maintain indoor smoking and boost their profits, all while putting workers at risk. The cigar industry strategy is to say that cigar bars only cater to a select few, but the reality is that they renormalize smoking, have broad marketing, and chip away at smokefree workplace protections. Often the spaces become smoking lounges for many other products, including hookah, marijuana, and cigarettes, exposing staff, patrons, and entertainers to secondhand smoke. Cigar lounges are also a frequent source of drifting smoke complaints if they are located in a mixed-use building, like in a casino or shopping plaza.
