WI Success Story: Zero Hour Fitness

Shawn Groshek, the physical education teacher at Adams-Friendship Middle School, wanted to give kids an opportunity to get active and burn some energy before school started so he started Zero Hour Fitness.  He gets to school early and opens up the wrestling gym at 7:30am for students.  From 7:30-8:00am he and the students work on different aspects of fitness including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance.

When the class starts at 7:30am, there are usually about 4-5 students but by 7:40am that number has grown to around 10-20 students.  The students love it and have already gotten in 20-30 minutes of physical activity before they begin school!  In fact some students said that the days they weren’t able to participate in zero hour, their days didn’t go as smoothly.

Shawn offered incentives for participation. Students could earn a t-shirt for 15 days of attendance and he held a drawing for donated water park passes for students that attended more than 25 days in a trimester.

“The group of kids grew from 8 in the month of September to 20+ almost every day in April.  The success of the group spread the word around the school and kids wanted to be part of it.” – Gary Weisenbeck, 7th grade physical education teacher

Resources used: staff time, wrestling gym and PE equipment, incentives (optional)

Way to go Shawn and Adams-Friendship Middle School!
