Meet the Grantee: Indianhead Community Action Agency

Indianhead Community Action Agency: "Head Start Tobacco Cessation Initiative: Partnering for Healthier Children and Families"

Grantee: Indianhead Community Action Agency, a 2015 CCC Implementation Grantee, is a non-profit agency that strives to end poverty by creating healthy and sustainable communities in rural Wisconsin.

Project: “Head Start Tobacco Cessation Initiative: Partnering for Healthier Children and Families” addressed tobacco use and exposure side effects, leading to a healthier environment for families and children.

Goal: The goal of this project was to create healthier environments for the more than 450 Head Start and Early Head Start families and enrolled children by increasing their understanding of how second and third hand smoke can impact small children.

Results: In a follow up survey of the initial participant group, 80% of staff participants indicated a change in smoking habits or shared information with families and community members. Participants also reported that the “concept of third hand smoke was new and very eye-opening”.

What’s Next: Through the partnerships developed, the project’s reach expanded to communities other than Early Head Start/Head Start staff and families. Indianhead Community Action Agency was also funded for a second phase of “Head Start Tobacco Cessation Initiative: Partnering for Healthier Children and Families” through December 2017.
