SUMMARY:Communication Approaches for Increasing Awareness of the Link Between Alcohol and Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Communication Approaches for Increasing Awareness of the Link Between Alcohol and Cancer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister For This Webinar\n\n\nEvent Type: Webinar\n\n\nDate: February 9\,‌ 2022\n\n\nTime: 11:00 PM – 12:00 PM CST\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAlcohol is a well-established human carcinogen\, but widespread awareness of this fact remains low. Significant research gaps across the cancer control continuum remain\, especially about how to effectively increase awareness and limit alcohol consumption. \nIn this webinar\, experts will address the lack of awareness of the link between alcohol and cancer with a specific focus on communication challenges of modest risk ratios\, exposures with mixed effects on health outcomes\, and the evolving nature of science with its incumbent uncertainties. Presenters will also discuss communication strategies based on novel research and lessons learned from the tobacco control field. \nThis webinar kicks off a 2022 quarterly series on alcohol and cancer. The webinar series builds on a 2020 NCI workshop and a recent paper addressing alcohol and cancer to further explore research concerning alcohol as a target for cancer prevention and control. Future topics include co-use of alcohol and other substances\, alcohol use in cancer patients and survivors\, and alcohol-related policies. \nReasonable Accommodations\nIndividuals who need reasonable accommodations to participate in this event should contact ncidccpsbrpadvances@mail.nih.gov. Requests should be made at least five business days in advance of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nPriscilla Martinez\, M.Phil.\, Ph.D.\nScientist\nAlcohol Research Group\nPublic Health Institute\nLecturer\nSchool of Public Health\nUniversity of California Berkeley\n\n\nJennifer L. SUMMARY:The Spotlight Series: Nurse Jenny Ovide & Pastor Dan Czaplewski
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Ovide\, or “Nurse Jenny\,” has spent 21 years of her career at All Saints Family Health Center as the Community Medical Clinical Coordinator on Milwaukee’s north side\, combining creativity\, health education\, and community engagement. The clinic hosts a garden\, greenhouse\, workout track\, and a collaborative farm with Mount Calvary Community Development Corporation (MCCDC)\, which is a nonprofit led by Reverend Dr. Daniel P. Czaplewski. \n“Pastor Dan” is the pastor at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and works with Nurse Jenny in partnership with Ascension St. Joseph’s Hospital and Ascension All Saints Family Health Center to direct their signature program: Farm to Hospital and Community. In this program\, interns are employed to operate an urban farm that provides fresh\, naturally grown vegetables to at-risk communities while developing the workforce. MCW family medicine residents and medical students work alongside in the garden\, delivering food\, assessing patients for food insecurity\, and holding healthy cooking/tasting classes in the teaching kitchen. \nNurse Jenny and Pastor Dan find it a humble challenge to listen to the community’s needs and help find ways to tackle the complicated and important issue of food insecurity and its effects on health. \nWe hope to see you on February 9! \nRegister here: https://mcw-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIod-uvqzkqHtdiHnpOgnn9PXEQcQ2q82ms
