SUMMARY:The Spotlight Series: Nurse Jenny Ovide & Pastor Dan Czaplewski
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Ovide\, or “Nurse Jenny\,” has spent 21 years of her career at All Saints Family Health Center as the Community Medical Clinical Coordinator on Milwaukee’s north side\, combining creativity\, health education\, and community engagement. The clinic hosts a garden\, greenhouse\, workout track\, and a collaborative farm with Mount Calvary Community Development Corporation (MCCDC)\, which is a nonprofit led by Reverend Dr. Daniel P. Czaplewski. \n“Pastor Dan” is the pastor at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and works with Nurse Jenny in partnership with Ascension St. Joseph’s Hospital and Ascension All Saints Family Health Center to direct their signature program: Farm to Hospital and Community. In this program\, interns are employed to operate an urban farm that provides fresh\, naturally grown vegetables to at-risk communities while developing the workforce. MCW family medicine residents and medical students work alongside in the garden\, delivering food\, assessing patients for food insecurity\, and holding healthy cooking/tasting classes in the teaching kitchen. \nNurse Jenny and Pastor Dan find it a humble challenge to listen to the community’s needs and help find ways to tackle the complicated and important issue of food insecurity and its effects on health. \nWe hope to see you on February 9! \nRegister here: https://mcw-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIod-uvqzkqHtdiHnpOgnn9PXEQcQ2q82ms

SUMMARY:A Nurse-Led Care Model to Improve Access to Rural Survivorship Care
DESCRIPTION:Join NCCS on Wednesday\, March 23\, at 12 PM ET\, to hear from Pam DeGuzman\, PhD\, RN\, who will discuss the development and evaluation of Comprehensive Assistance: Rural Interventions\, Nursing and Guidance (CARING)\, a nurse-led intervention aimed at reducing disparities in quality of life for rural cancer survivors. \nDuring active treatment\, rural survivors may forgo supportive care interventions to prioritize and consolidate medical visits into one day\, with the goal of minimizing travel (called “appointment stacking”). CARING connects rural survivors with an oncology-specialized registered nurse several weeks after the completion of active treatment\, to exclusively focus on lingering supportive care needs. \nDr. Pamela DeGuzman is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She has worked with individuals with cancer since 1996\, beginning her career as a bedside nurse at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington\, DC. She obtained her PhD in 2012 and joined the faculty of the UVa School of Nursing. In addition to developing innovative nurse-led care models\, she is currently studying the implementation of telemedicine video visits in rural public libraries and has written the foundational research agenda aimed at studying this practice. She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles. \nLearn more about NCCS’s Survivorship Champions program for clinicians and researchers: https://canceradvocacy.org/champions
