Patients are dealing with the emotional cost of a cancer diagnosis and\, for some\, the financial toxicity of not being able to afford treatment. \nJoin us for thought-provoking conversations as we examine the “cost of cancer” at our annual fall cancer conference. Informative presentations and interactive discussions await you! \nOur annual fall cancer conference is designed for health care professionals\, as well as patients and loved ones.\nINTENDED AUDIENCE \nThis activity is designed for individuals who are involved in cancer treatment and education of cancer patients and their families: oncology physicians\, primary care physicians\, oncology nurses\, oncology nurse practitioners\, clinical research associates\, health educators\, social workers\, psychologists\, chaplains\, and other interested health care professionals involved in cancer care. Patients\, caregivers and community members are also encouraged to attend.\nELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE \nThis continuing education activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills\, interpersonal and communication skills\, professionalism\, and the interprofessional competency of values/ethics for interprofessional practice.\nGLOBAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES \nAs a result of participation in this educational activity\, members of the healthcare team will be able to: \nIdentify how and why the cost of cancer care has increased\nOutline strategies to increase awareness of the emotional toll of cancer amongst health care professionals and strategies to assist patients with this issue\nRecognize how funds are allocated for cancer research\nDiscuss the escalating price of cancer therapies\nDiscuss research in global communities as related to the cost of cancer care \nCONFERENCE FEES\, CANCELLATION POLICY \n$175 Physicians \n$125 Nurses\, Physician Assistants\, Clinical Research Associates\, Social Workers\, Other Health Care Professionals \n$40 UW Staff\, Residents\, Fellows\, Students \n$40 Cancer Patients\, Survivors\, Caregivers and Family Members \nThe conference fee includes the cost of tuition\, materials\, breakfast\, lunch\, one break\, and a nonrefundable processing fee of $25. \nRequests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to help@icep.wisc.edu. DESCRIPTION:As noted in a recent Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) article\, an important question asked\, “Is lung cancer screening reaching individuals who can gain the most from it?” And the most recent report revealed that inadequate access to healthcare services due to geographic\, financial\, or logistical challenges continues to remain a commonly cited barrier to cancer screening experienced by populations with low socioeconomic status (SES) characteristics. This includes low-income populations\, populations without a usual source of healthcare services\, uninsured\, underinsured\, and populations residing in rural or remote areas (including medically underserved areas)\, as well as members of some racial/ethnic minority populations are those who experience significant disparities in cancer screening and follow-up care. \nTopics in the session include: lung cancer disparities\, health system evidence-based interventions to improve tobacco cessation\, and lung cancer screening rates among low-income patients.

Available data show that LGBT+ populations use tobacco products\, particularly menthol cigarettes\, at higher rates than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts. SUMMARY:First Breath Program Update
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, October 5\, 2022\, at 10:00AM CT to learn more about the First Breath program focus expansion! \n  \nSince 2001\, First Breath has helped over 24\,000 pregnant and postpartum individuals become and stay tobacco-free. First Breath takes a unique approach\, partnering with over 280 organizations throughout the state to identify pregnant\, postpartum\, and caregiving people who use tobacco.  Organizations refer individuals to First Breath\, where a team of highly trained Health Educators provides strength-based\, trauma-informed quit coaching. Through this approach\, First Breath has been successful at reducing perinatal tobacco use\, however\, there has been a long-seen need to address other substances beyond tobacco.  About half of First Breath participants use other substances and rates of prenatal substance use in Wisconsin remain stubbornly high. DESCRIPTION:Featured Presenter:\nDr. Francisco Cartujano\, 2020-2021 Catalyst Award Recipient \nModerator:\nDr. Albert Rizzo\, Chief Medical Officer for the American Lung Association \nProgram begins at 12:00 PM (CT). \n\nAs a member of the American Lung Association’s research team\, Francisco Cartujano\, M.D.\, recipient of the 2021-2022 Catalyst Award\, will provide an overview and update on his project\, “Kick Vaping: A Vaping Cessation Text Messaging Intervention for Latino Young Adults.” The project aims to develop and evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of his Kick Vaping initiative\, a text messaging intervention to help Latino young adults stop vaping. While Latinos generally have a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking\, more and more are turning to e-cigarettes and vaping. In response to a survey conducted by Dr. Cartujano and his colleagues\, 55% of Latino adolescents were curious about e-cigarettes (e.g.\, would be willing to try them if offered by a friend) and 19% are currently using e-cigarettes. These latter individuals are exactly who Dr. Cartujano is trying to reach with Kick Vaping. “Recognizing the population-level concerns\, it’s urgent to develop treatment options that reach and engage high-risk young adults. Not only do they use text messages more than any other age demographic\, but they’ve also demonstrated interest in quitting vaping. I feel optimistic this intervention will bring about a positive transformation in attitudes and actions\,” says Dr. Cartujano. \nAccess information for this online webinar will be provided by email upon registration.
