SUMMARY:NCCN PHARMACY UPDATES: CROSSROADS OF EXERCISE AND CHEMOTHERAPY
DESCRIPTION:Exercise and nutrition may be only briefly discussed during treatment planning\, and patients may be unwilling to consider exercise during chemotherapy.  It is important to provide education and an action plan to outline how exercise may not only reduce side effects from chemotherapy but also help chemotherapy work better and improve survival.  As new data emerges\, more specific exercise “doses” can be prescribed. \n\n\n\n\nTARGET AUDIENCE\n\n\n\nThis program is designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists\, physicians\, nurses\, nurse practitioners\, physician assistants and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer. \n\n\n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n\nFollowing this activity\, participants should be able to: \n\nSummarize the history of and describe the future directions for exercise oncology.\nExplain how exercise may improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy through alterations in the tumor microenvironment and how exercise mitigates side effects of chemotherapy.\nDesign an exercise plan to incorporate into drug counseling.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\n\n\nSUPPORTERS:\n\n\nThis activity is supported by educational grants from: \n\nAstraZeneca\nBayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.\nDaiichi Sankyo\nEpizyme Inc.\nNovartis\nSanofi Genzyme\n\nThis activity is supported through independent medical education grants from: \n\nMerck & Co.\, Inc.\nRegeneron Pharmaceuticals\, Inc and Sanofi Genzyme\n\nThis activity is supported by an education grant from Seagen Inc. formerly Seattle Genetics. \n\nRegister here: https://education.nccn.org/node/91437#group-tabs-node-course-default4
